As they say on ‘Would I Lie To You’ (TV programme) “It was…true!”
A DOG CALLED JIM
We’re both sat on a bench in Sidmouth.
Sunshine in the Connaught Gardens:
She points to a wire-haired fox terrier
That bounces back and forth,
A coiled spring, to and from its owner.
“That’s the sort of dog I’d like”, she says
I turn to look at her and wonder
Where has this come from?
Didn’t we agree that animals are tying,
Especially at our age?
She senses my puzzlement in the moment.
“You know, if anything happens to you.”
Silence hangs like a lead behind the door.
“I think I’ll call him Jim”, she says.

“A Dog Called Jim” brings a smile to my face, Gray; “tying” is a perfect word here, and new to me — we don’t hear that in the U.S. So, thank you!
