Just a bit of fun this… “We happily say, ‘try and come early’ but none of us would put this into the past tense as ‘he tried and came early'” ‘Invitation to Linguistics’ by Richard Hudson (Basil Blackwell 1984)
“I like a challenge.” Gray Lightfoot 2014
TRY AND COME EARLY (A LINGUISTIC CHALLENGE)
“Try and come early”
Said Shirley to Matt.
“I’m so looking forward
To you seeing my flat”.
“I’ll try and come early”
Said Matt to his dear.
“I’ll be there at seven
With a four pack of beer”.
“It’s ten to, you’re early”.
She tossed back her hair.
“I tried” he replied
And he kissed her right there.
Their passions aroused
They fell on the bed
But within a short while
That passion was dead.
“I’m sorry” said Matt
To a crestfallen Shirley,
Who with a sigh said,
“You tried and came early.”
